Who is this?
Hi, I’m Dyon - short for Dionysus. In my nomadic journeys since 2016 it’s become abundantly clear to me that I can only truly love others to the degree I love myself.
I grew up in a caring family - but one in which I became well acquainted with death and upheaval at a young age. By the time I turned 8 I’d effectively had three moms and countless nannies. I was steeped in evangelical purity culture as a adolescent, and as a young adult I turned towards religious fundamentalism hoping that stricter structures would help in my failing attempts to fit the mold of who I believed I was “supposed” to be. In this setting I was taught that I was corrupt to my core and deserved nothing but damnation. Under the weight of incessant shame and gross patriarchal expectations I developed a bunch of destructive coping mechanisms. Those led me to a series of broken relationships and eventually I found myself set adrift with nowhere I belonged and no idea who I was.
But shaken free of the restrictive “shoulds” I set out to meet whoever I really am for the very time. I embraced uncomfortable but healing challenges and entertained hosts of previously foreign perspectives. Through this process I was astounded to discover I had permission to love me.
My mission now is three-fold. To show up in the world and in my interactions as a:
Permissionary: empowering permission to deeply love our authentic selves
Storybreaker: compassionately questioning suppressive “shoulds”
Expansion Kinkster: encouraging pleasure in learning from discomfort
I’ll be using this platform to engage in this mission by sharing snippets from my memoir as well as other writings, reflections, and recorded conversations.

I recently discovered there’s a Substack app with a lot of great features! My favorite is the ability to have it read aloud any post whether the author has recorded their own voiceover or not. I tend to prefer listening over staring at a screen, and the computer generated voice has a surprisingly good cadence!
